15 years ago- my husband and I had been in other Greek islands and enjoyed our visits there. But as soon the ferry docked in Naxos port, we felt this could be home. It was charming but not over touristed like other islands. The island began to peel open its layers like an onion: First we found the long sandy beaches and swam in the crystal clear water. After our swims, we were delighted by the beach tavernas which served fresh homegrown Naxos food. Then we began to explore the rich archeological and cultural scene in Naxos. The cherry on top was discovering the beautiful inland scenery -walking the hiking paths thru olive groves and old villages, all surrounded by craggy mountains. We started to talk to locals and found that Naxos seemed to draw specially nice people.Happy end- we fell in love and were lucky enuf to find the perfect house in the perfect spot for us.
